SUMMARY:Candlelit Procession to Durham Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of every academic year, DUECC holds, in conjuction with the College Chaplains and Durham Cathedral, a procession by candlelight from Prebends Bridge up to said Cathedral. This year over six hundred people braved the elements to join the procession, led by groups from DUECC with their banners. They were treated to wonderful music from Castle Choir, time to look around the building and meet DUECC's member groups and the Chaplains, a short service and refreshments afterwards. The atmosphere was lively, despite the wind(!) and the event provided a great introduction to the Cathedral and start to the year!

SUMMARY:One World Week Service
DESCRIPTION:Every year, One World Week addresses a particular issue that affects people throughout the world and reminds us of our common humanity. This year's theme was environmental and DUECC, working with Durham Churches Together, held a fair and service to mark the occassion. At North Road Methodist, many of DUECC's groups enjoyed food, games and raised awareness of key issues. The service heard from people who had visited parts of the developing world and shared their stories, witnessing to the human cost of climate change and poverty, and looking with hope to the future.

SUMMARY:Service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
DESCRIPTION:In 1908, the Octave for Unity was introduced, aiming to bring Christians from different denominations together, to pray for and strive towards unity, following Jesus' prayer that we may be one. As part of this year's Week of Prayer, DUECC held a service in the Tunstall Chapel at the Castle, using the Churches Together liturgy, this year composed by Korean Christians and based on Ezekiel 37:17. Canon Stephen Cherry from the Cathedral spoke of the need to listen to each other, to think in terms of 'we' and 'with' rather than 'I' and 'me', and look out for signs of God's glory in unexpected people and places.

DESCRIPTION:DUECC offered a chance to explore God's call on our lives in a special service, 'Called to be Me'. The evening involved worship, music, various prayer stations and activities such as praying with the Methodist Covenant Prayer and anointing with oil. There was also a dance by Melissa Charters and a talk by Kate Bruce on vocation, drawing on the story of the midwives in the early chapters of Exodus. The event provided space to explore and offer to God our gifts and to think and pray about how he may be calling us to use them.

SUMMARY:The Beat Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Leech Hall, St John’s College

Beat is essentially a form of writing that emerged in North America in the 1950's. Key proponents include Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Beat writing was characterised by a number of elements including the articulation of a hunger for worthwhile experience and meaning. Beat writing also used language creatively to craft vivid literary images; it stretched the meaning of words to express the desperate search for something more. The Beat Eucharist takes this use of language and this hunger for experience and meaning to communicate something of the intensity and wonder of what happens at the Eucharist and in the lived life of Christian faith.
